The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law was founded in
1963 by the leaders of the American bar, at the request of President Kennedy,
in order to help defend the civil rights of minorities and the poor. Its
Board of Trustees presently includes past Presidents of the American Bar
Association, past Attorneys General of the United States, numerous law
school deans, and many of the nation’s leading lawyers.
The Lawyers’ Committee has local affiliates in Boston, Chicago,
Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Washington,
D.C. Directly and through its local affiliates, hundreds of attorneys
have represented thousands of clients in civil rights cases across the
country, including a large number of cases challenging discrimination
in employment based on race or sex.
The Lawyers’ Committee is a tax-exempt, nonprofit civil rights
organization. The Lawyers’ Committee has either represented a party,
or has filed an amicus brief, in the majority of the civil rights decisions
handed down by the Supreme Court over the last three decades. It has testified
on numerous occasions before Congressional committees holding hearings
on the enforcement of the civil rights laws.
